Loud (noisy) people, feets on seat. Drunk/smelly/dirty passengers.
People drinking alcohol on the train. Children being noisy. Babies crying.

Huge round of applause for that list though as one who enjoys the odd glass of wine on a long distance journey, I rather say, people over drinking alcohol on trains, and add people who don't clear up their litter too.

I always like to imagine what the person is saying on the other end if I'm sat near someone having a (loud) phone call.

My pet peeves are people attempting to board trains before others alight; broken aircon and the hopper windows remaining locked shut and no guard in sight and lastly I hate when you're about to make a long journey on a flexible ticket and then seemingly every carriage is full of seat reservations. Happened a little while ago on a GWR service somewhere. HST was missing a coach which was an unreserved coach. Couldn't get a seat and was standing between Chippenham and Exeter, once!

Happened to me on a VTEC service not too long ago, and when I found two seats without reservations at a table, 4 people turned up and insisted I moved regardless!

Nothing annoys me on a train really, until I get back up North. Splitting my time between London and North Yorkshire, the difference in the quality of infrastructure which the North lacks drives me round the bend. With the exception of 313/317/465/466 most EMU rolling stock in the big city is no more than 15 years old and generally quite spacey. Back home in Yorkshire, we have buses for trains (literally). New commuter stock we have (185) are too small and often full and standing in the off peak.

People who sit in the aisle seat, blocking the inner empty one.

Unnecessarily long-winded PA announcements, either human or robotic.

Insufficient or inconsistent announcements, like failing to warn of the next stop.

(Especially on Transpennine or East Midlands services) ridiculously short and overcrowded trains.

The things on trains that annoy me the most are unnecessary noise (such as people broadcasting their telephone conversation to the rest of the train), people eating smelly food and people sitting deciding to next to me when there's a large amount of other seats available. I don't mind if people sit next to me when there's hardly any seats available though, as that's fair enough.

Stupidly awkward connections. Particularly when you have hourly services, yet they still manage to leave within the minimum connection time or before the other arrives.

This happens a lot in the North.

And stupidly early last trains - again the North.

Mr Lemming: in response to your question, no I don't commute on Thameslink but I have experienced its evening peak recently. The main issue seems to be that the old rolling stock creates an unpleasant environment - LM have similar passenger loadings, but a modern 350 is more tolerable than a screechy, oven hot, loud as hell 319!

Feet on seats, leaky headphones with the wearer always seemingly have an extraordinary bad musical taste, swearing, bags on seats, consumption of putrid takeaway food, conductors shoving their way through aisles crammed with standing passengers, insufficient seating. Laptop users who think the train is for them and their self importance.

Another bugbear of mine is when you pull into a busy station and you are getting off the train, the people who are crowded around the door and don't allow room for passengers to get off before boarding themselves, sometime people even pushing past people who are still getting off.

At risk of annoying some of the railstaff here, another bugbear of mine is conductors who suddenly decide they want to do a ticket check halfway through a journey and wake you up or distract you from your music needlessly. If they really want to do a ticket check, why not do it as soon as the train has left the station where you've just boarded?

Probably because they've got a train to walk through that can take a long time to get through.

In my case I'm referring to a Northern 142 or 144 on my daily commute. It shouldn't take the conductor that long to walk through 2 carriages!

Don't like it?? Drive, or get the bus. I'm sorry we were too busy dealing with other passengers, or strategically timing our ticket run to coincide with the stations that are unbarriered/unmanned/too busy to maximise our revenue take.

I'd like to suggest some new catagories for rail staff, if I may?? How about 'passengers that keep their headphones in when you're checking tickets then when you ask to see take one out and go "WHAT?" while you're stood there like a spare part', or 'those that just proffer it out without even looking at you', or even better still, 'those that huff and puff over the fact that some jobsworth oik has asked to see the ticket that they've paid lots of hard earned money for'??

Never did I say I don't enjoy my job!! I can assure you that very little relaxing gets done on the trains of the TOC I work for, due to the seats being like paving slabs. My comments were actually meant rather tongue in cheek, however alas, like usual, free speech always offends someone on these forums.

I always take my earphones out and say good morning to the guard when being ticket checked. Hopefully it makes a difference after you've seen 12 carriages of rude commuters looking at their iPads whilst waving their season ticket in your general direction.
