I'm really sorry but I actually meant going north

In which case, either 1W24 (Gat 1108 d110), 2W30 (Gat 1103 d1108) are your only real options, if you can hang around that bit longer. Bear in mind though, that a lot of these services have been cancelled today.

I'll be arriving at 10:00 into Gatwick so would there be any before 11:10?

Have any Class 700s had to leave people behind yet?
Can't see that happening for some time. The space inside should make them excellent people movers in the peaks. Perhaps if one or two 12 car trains before get cancelled it will be a different story though!

But still infinitely better than if a 377/387 gets dropped.

Yes. Has anyone worked out the theoretical maximum for people able to get on a crush loaded train? It must be a lot.

It must get worked out, because the train designers design the suspension (and hence determine the kinematic envelope for gauge clearance) for the possibility of crush loading.

I've never seen figures tabulated for a range of mainline rolling stock; however LU have published theoretical crush loads for various tube trains in the past. IIRC they allowed for 7 people per sq m for their crush load condition.

The official standing is 1,084 which is probably at 4/sqm ( equivalent of seating +standing of 145 per car and given 190+/car is just possible on some existing stock so at 7/sqm it would be nuts (over 2500 for a 12 car)

I've knocked-up a timetable sheet based on the diagrams given for this weeks class 700s:

View attachment 27488

These may assist those that intend to intercept the soft launch trains at various intermediate stops. If there are any mistakes in the data, please let me know.

You could probably include that service which runs to/from London Bridge

I could except it took ages to get a .pdf that accomodated all the stations on a single sheet. Maybe when some more diagrams are released I'll have a try because there will be to many journeys to fit on one sheet horizontally.

I'm by no means an expert - but I wouldn't be surprised if they took something crazy like that as the crush loading conditions. It's a common occurrence in engineering to go a little over-the-top in extreme cases to give it a bit of built-in redundancy.

If they planned for 4/sqm, and that occurred throughout the train but one more person squeezed on, you'd be in a situation where everybody could feasibly fit in but the train is now heavier than it's been safely designed/tested for. If you sort it out at 7/sqm you're confident that it's never actually going to go above that, and you're in the clear.

Much safer in engineering to over-compensate, than to build it right "on the money" and risk being prone to incredibly extreme conditions.

The units I drive will prevent the train from moving if its overloaded. I would hope a 700 has a similar safety system.

Can the last door on class 700s not open at Gatwick Airport?
The information board stated the front 11 cars only for Gatwick.
Apologies of this has been raised already.
Unit 700112 was at Brighton when the information was raised.

All the ones I've had have released 12. There was an issue before.
The big issue we have with them is at some stops if we are terminating we have to go past the normal stop board to the T board associated with flu or all and then do a manual release.
Had it when I brought one out of bridges depot with no headcode and pis. It only released 4 so had to manually override it.

Those colourful chevron things? No, these are fairly similar in size to the usual main line stop boards. The differences are that they are diamond shaped and a different colour to the existing "car stop" boards, and use FLU and RLU to denote length, rather than 12 or 8. They are also positioned for viewing from the central driving position on a 700; and so at some stations are not at exactly the same places as the 12 car boards.

Oh those things - yes; I'm aware of them. Just didn't twig from the different description in this thread that it was those...

Not all platforms can support 12 car working. Can't remember what the situation is but the beacons are fully up and running just yet so interim solution is 11 coaches in the database. Won't be for long.

Anybody looking to travel on a 700 today be aware that there is major disruption at Gatwick Airport so 700s are off schedueld diagrams.
Ah that's not great to hear. Was hoping to capture one on the 1140 Bedford-Brighton, assume that's not being 700 worked?

The 750V DC appears to have set itself on fire on the crossover south of the station.

I was looking at getting the 09:16 Gatwick-West Hampstead but it got cancelled so got a pair of 387s instead. I'm looking at trying to get a 700 later.
