Dominic Lawson of the Daily Fail's rather predictable take on the GTR dispute:

A number of relatives were either unable to make, or much delayed in attending, our younger daughter’s 21st birthday party in Brighton.
The problem was multiple cancellations of trains on Southern Rail. This has for weeks been afflicting the Gatwick Express, causing many holidaymakers to miss their flights.
The unhappy situation is the result of unprecedented levels of conductors reporting sick: Southern Rail said last week that ‘on a daily basis, an average of 83 Southern services are being cancelled due to the current ongoing sickness problems’.
In fact, this is deliberate policy by conductors in the RMT union, who oppose the company’s plans to change working practices. It is a form of wildcat industrial action, fraudulently masquerading as illness.
Its perpetrators should be sacked and replaced with honest men and women.

Whilst it's the underground, I can see parallels with the GTR dispute. Perhaps GTR would like to order some S stock for their DOO operation!

It's perfectly safe and if not then it's the passengers falt for using their mobile or being intoxicated. I don't know if the three year old girl rushed. Perhaps that's the falt of the adult(s) with her.

The argument a from RMT are well put for a change.

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/tran...uge-rise-in-passenger-accidents-a3264531.html

The issue with the S stock was to do with larger gaps between the platform and the train than the previous stock (IIRC as a result of the floor being lower to allow for better step free access) - something that isn't really the problem here. That said, the DOO equipment on the S stock seems to be a lot better than on the Electrostars.

Whilst the Daily Mail is advocating sacking all of the guards, it also suggests that they are all replaced rather than removed. Do we take it then that they are against DOO and would prefer a guard on their trains?

Well presumably not, otherwise they'd have a more informed grasp of why the existing staff are taking action!

Rather an ironic statement really, 'they should all be sacked and replaced with honest men and women'. If indeed it were that simple to sack people, that's exactly what GTR would've done - there sure as hell wouldn't have been any replacements though!

They can't really sack them straight away but I'm sure there'll be a wave of disciplinary hearings once individuals' totals reach a certain level.

It may not be a problem on Southern but it shows why have other staff around can be useful.

When if it were used on Southern, I suspect they would still want it to be DOO.

The following caught my eye:
Transport for London today admitted problems were exacerbated by making the new S-stock trains level with the platform to improve wheelchair access.
I've seen very few wheelchairs on the tube. I have seen quite a lot of massive pushchairs though, often on peak, overcrowded trains. Perhaps I've just travelled on the wrong tubes?

What annoys me is that people with pushchairs rarely use the designated areas i.e. the area with the tip up seats, and instead park it near the doors.

This even happens when there is no-one sitting on the tip-up seats, they still choose to park their pushchair in the most awkward and disruptive position.

It's been removed from the Northern Rail safety briefs.
Nobody can confirm why.

Possibly because of the content. I have noticed that some of the RED videos can be a little more graphic than is necessary. We had one removed from our briefs because it showed the raw footage of a person going under a train at a platform. Turns out that the Driver of the train was in the briefing.

I remember the fatigue one where the ex Hollyoaks actor was a PWay guy and hit the cyclist on their way home from work. They took a precaution that time and asked if people wanted to leave the room.

I think this video is a little on the edge. Being reminded you can, and potentially will, kill someone; can take its toll after 10+ years and too many Drivers have :(

Yes folks, we get reminded on a regular basis with charts, graphs and raw video footage how "safe" DOO is.

When this report refers to "Its perpetrators" in that quote, I read that as referring to the leadership of the RMT union and not the staff who are union members.

Have I misread the quote?

Sounds like someone hadn't done their homework!

An uncomfortable reminder for the poor sod, despite the obvious intentions of the video.

I think so. I interpet it as being the staff who are unfortunate enough to be ill at the wrong time and so have the temerity to inconvenience a journalists daughter.

Still, as I hold both his profession and paper in contempt, I won't loose sleep over his ill-informed rant against my profession.

The irony is that because it's DOO, the problems here will be nothing compared to what will happen at Southern!

The underground for me is so patchy in wheelchair access I choose to only use the Jubilee line extention.

If a wheelchair customer needs to get off at a station with S-Stock which may have bigger gap, thru will need a ramp, if there isn't the staff who can do it at their destination station, they can't go.

Would you really risk putting slightly drunk disabled and vulnerable folks in a taxi from their nearest manned station at the dead of night for what could be a very long journey?

While I have sympathy to your plight, I have no idea what you are on about here. What is wrong with putting a disabled person in a taxi if there were no member of staff to put them on a train, assuming that a suitable taxi could be found? That's what we do and most people are appreciative of this alternative, which affords them privacy as a bonus.

Just interested.

I wonder if that tweet will be used in the trial along with their constant tweets regarding sickness?!

Any legal standing on admission of guilt from that tweet?

I personally don't mind if its VERY occasional, but I feel this will be abused way to much for Southern 'Off the hook'.

Them there is the waiting for it in all types of conditions.

Could be very unsafe.

With regard to the S stock, as it's only the s stock using the plaforms concerned, long term could retractable platforms be installed like what used to be used on the New York subway at the Ferry Terminal station?

It is devious to end your post, after a lot of cruel insults,by saying you would back anyone who beat the MD of a major rail company in a dark alley way,& then after it had shocked people who read it,including myself who condemned your brutal remarks, to remove the offending last line so my post looks like an overreaction. I am glad you removed it,but the filth has been spread over this normally very good site.
I imagine Mr Horton is trying to run the railway as well as he can & DOO has been widely used since a quarter of a century ago, world wide. I don't expect even the collective of red flag wavers would have applauded seeing the man who removed them from walking in front of locos 2 century's ago being beaten to a pulp. Glad to hear you don't work on our railway.

Not too bothered about disabled folks killing themselves because of the added stress of using the train after DOO and OBS arrive at Southern.

Somebody needs a reality check.

Network Rail are apparently looking into it.

This is my utter frustration with the Southern OBS/DOO policy, there are ways to make this work, but both Southern and DfT don't have a bloody clue what they are doing!

But in all of these situations the train could still run if a guard was not necessary. This is what I personally think will happen - we will still have guards rostered to run on every train because of how much revenue they make, but if there is a rostering error/guard ill/guard delayed on a different train then it will run anyway.

Only on exceptional circumstances, my fear is this excuse will be made way to many times!

There needs to be penalties if after a certain percentage of occasions this happens.

Prepare for TA code (Diagram Error) usage to shoot up then. Cynic moi? ;)

Lol. That's really funny. Worthy of something like the sketches John Bird and John Fortune did in their comedy shows, where one would play George Par and they'd talk about something they considered bad for 10 minutes.

Yes unfortunately Paul as much as you would love it to be aimed at the RMT... it does in fact state that the "conductors" who are members of the RMT are indeed the perpetrators.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Someone show that to the RMT. Even they couldn't screw that up.. All they have to do is say we need Conductors because even Southern admit that DOO on long trains is not safe.

Comedy gold... you couldn't make it up! :D
