This 'un is just one step from joining The League of Super Duds, and sadly there's too many people sucking up the WiFi for it to work on either my phone or tablet.

!! I like that League of Super Duds! Never knew you could have an issue of too mahy people using the WiFi that brings it down, never really had slow WiFi problems, although sometimes I just end up using my data instead.

which means it's time for Tech's Mobile Disco for a bit.

haha!!! Remember when you had Video 125's music soundtrack on your MP3 player and we'd listen to tracks like the Down Fishguard theme on the HST!

MyGatwick to get ourselves a free coffee from Pret. Apparently you can get one everytime you fly from Gatwick, well worth remembering, although admittedly my flying trips from Gatwick will be few and far between!

I only went out of there once to Salzburg, never heard of MyGatwick to be honest! You get one free coffee every visit if you're flying out or something then?

Eventually we're all checked in with the bags, and as the Norwegian live chat guy said, we wouldn't need our ESTA or travel documents to be printed, although we still did it just in case. A wander around the shops results in me getting a 2 pack of RFID card protectors for £7.50

Can't say I've ever heard of an RFID protector?

Norwegian have put winner EI-LNI, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, on the 1710 to New York JFK. Why an EI-reg for a Norwegian airline, I don't understand, but hey ho I'm not complaining. Around 1645 we get to board, and it's relatively quick and organised compared to Ryanair!

Jammy!! Required for sight here, even my 2016 European spotters book has the 787 as still on order!

Airlines apparently register EI for tax free reasons or something, but I got chatting to a Norwegian pilot on a train to Gatwick, and apparently registering them EI also gives flexibility on operating routes in Europe apparently, not sure how it makes a difference. He fly's on that route you were taking, takes the train from Ashford to Gatwick, does Gatwick - New York, New York - Oslo, Oslo - New York then New York to Gatwick then hike home to Ashford! Shift and a half!

but thankfully he and his partner paid for an upgrade to Premium. $400 each, ouch!
HOW MUCH!!

I get some plane regs on the way to the runway, mostly Easyjet but hey ho.

I'd be interested in your log in case I missed something rare or I desperately need! Feel free to PM it if you wish, if you don't mind :)

The option was chicken or salmon, so we both go for chicken. This is basically a mini roast chicken dinner, with a a white chocolate and raspberry mousse pot for pudding. The pasta pot wasn't hot or nice to my taste though, but others like it.

Never had an onboard meal ever, then I've not done long haul yet! Is it pretty reasonable overall?

we jump into a famous New York yellow taxi, its number being 8H86 for the record.

LOL!!! 35mph freight headcode ;)

Kennedy Fried Chicken was around the corner and we get an enormous pizza [21” across! - Ed] and a large bottle of Coke for $12, an absolute bargain! This went down beautifully, and by the time we'd unpacked and so on it was well gone midnight local time! A very long but good day, and we were both more than excited about the trip's main event starting in just a matter of hours!

I bet the KFC over there is pretty rateable!!

Winners: 1 (EI-LNI), no rail scores
Shack scores: 0

Unless you count the airport as a shack

The 787's were originally registered to the airlines Irish subsidiary Norwegian Air International. They are gradually being transferred to Norwegian registration. As I understand it the company was registered in Ireland so it could get future traffic rights to and from the EU. Norway isn't in the EU. Interesting fact there for Brexiters. Ha ha.

Yes that was it, I remember the pilot saying something along those lines now

So they will be back to LN reg soon?

God sake! I nearly cleared the 737's until they registered them as EI-FHx, then had to start over with the new serials, now I've gone some EI Dreamliners I take soon I'd have to start over again with the re-registered LN serials!

I get the impression it will be the 787's since they fly to the US and not the 737's. I'm no business or international trade expert though. :D Never flown Norwegian, they only briefly served Liverpool flying to Copenhagen.

A great read there tech, sounds like you had an awesome break, my brother had a long weekend there and said there was so much to do.

The subway system sounded a bit naff but Coney Island, always reminds me of one of my fave films,The Warriors.

Shame you couldn't get onto the platforms of Grand Central Station and got to see some more of the big American locos.

Many thanks for sharing.

Glad you enjoyed the read 47403!

James: Oh gosh, I haven't heard The Down Fishguard in years, crikey I'd like to watch that one again!

MyGatwick was advertised quite well around the airport terminal, I would certainly Google it. They give you several offers after signing up, but the free Pret coffee is the most usual to cranks!

Still got the notes on my phone, didn't get much in JFK on the way there sadly due to darkness:

G-ZBAL (Monarch).G-EZWG,G-EZTF,G-EZUD,G-EZAA,G-EZOO (easyjet).5N-BQN (Med View).EI-EJK (Aliitalia).F-GSPK (Air France)

All of which were required for sight. The way home got this lot:

N955DL (Delta),F-GSPV,F-GSOJ (Air France),G-EZFC,G-EZAB (easyjet),EI-FHT (norwegian),G-EUYA (BA),TF-MOM (WOW Air),VP-CKZ (Cayman Airlines),B-2001 (China Eastern),G-VSXY,G-VROY,G-VKSS (Virgin Atlantic)

The only one dud for sight there was the BA craft to my surprise!

On-board food in my book isn't worth paying for. I should have included required airports in the day 1 stats eh? Technically Gatwick is dud from 14 or 15 years ago, but this was my first logged flight to/from it. Same applies to Cardiff, not flown from there since 2002 or 2003, need to get back there to add it to my Flightdiary!

RFID protectors are basically little plastic things that block accidental contactless use in a wallet, as well as the more important issue of blocking illegal scans of your cards.

Aye the Premium upgrade was a lot more than I'd be willing to pay, that's for sure. The WiFi issue I had on the 180 happens a lot in my experience, it's failed to connect for me due to the connection being too slow due to high usage.

Looking at the trip report, seems you had quite the time...! Glad I was able to help you out with the 787 on the return leg.

Also, great to see them doing an almost great repair job on Alpha Delta, though I can see where the original nose was ripped off

Glad to see you had a good time! NYC is fantastic - I've been three times and would still go back in an instant. Still lots for me to see and do - Intrepid is a big gap, and I've yet to take the Staten Island Ferry(!).

I took an Amtrak train just over a year ago from New York to Washington DC and back. The comfort and legroom of the standard class accommodation is on a par with 1st Class over here, although the onboard service wasn't the same. Still, I'd highly recommend it. Passing through the North East on the train was a fascinating experience. I've always wanted to go from coast to coast on the rails, although probably won't have the time to do it justice sadly.

Thanks for the review of Norwegian - can't say I'm overly impressed with the offering. A shame that your return flight was so poor. Think I'll be sticking to Aer Lingus - much more reliable, brilliant fares, transit in Dublin is easy and includes Preclearence.

PS - think a 787 is big? Try a 747 with a 10% load in economy 8-) I had a very comfy exit seat with 6' of legroom, and no-one nearby at all. (I still have no idea how that was a viable flight for VS! Must have been full going out to JFK).

If Virgin hadn't wanted something like £1,000 each for our return flights we'd have used them. Indeed, I'm not sure how come we didn't check out BA in the end. I'm still waiting to hear back from Norwegian, which is disappointing. As is awaiting the arrival of my AFQR 2016 still!

I've got FlightRadar24 on my phone now, so I anticipate filling my AFQR quicker now

Well jealous of your 747 experience, would love to have a go!

21/03/2016 - Tech's Evacuate The Lists

Having not got to sleep til at least 0200, it was hard to get up just before 0600! Still, I soldier on and get up for a nice coffee. Gosh I missed Douwe Egberts when I was in New York! I make another one for the trip to town, just as well that I also took my warm hat, it was very cold this morning. I could have gone for the 0753 off Hereford, but my stomach now took over, and thanks to my sister having cash on her [I owe her £4.70 now, must remember that! - Ed] we get breakfast in The Walk Cafe, Hereford. A quick supply raid for some pop in Morrisons is carried out then I check for gen. Sadly I will still need a 507 after today if it all sticks, and to get my last 508 I will need the 1704 off Lime Street, so after all the split ticket planning I end up shelling out for an Off Peak Return straight through after all. As I had £46.50 in RTVs [from 3 seperate occasions earlier this year, and only that much due to Virgin and Northern being generous! - Ed] I pay only £7.70 for my ticket, very nice! I also redeem my full Pumpkin collector card, then join 175006 on the 0908 to Manchester Piccadilly. It's pretty busy, so I was lucky to get on fast and get a seat. Time to get Tech's Mobile Disco on and get the notebook updated from the New York trip, which takes until just before Nantwich. At Crewe I meet up with Fishquinn, and they can't issue a Saveaway here much to our surprise. Eventually dud [surprise surprise! - Ed] 390134 arrives and takes us to Lime Street, where we eventually arrive 8 down. After getting our Saveaways surprisingly quick, we end up on dud 319383 for a leap to Edge Hill.

Dud 319363 takes us onwards to Wavertree Technology Park, where a short wait gets us 319367 in all its dudness [not much luck for me today eh? - Ed] takes us back to Lime Street. A Costa move follows and it's downstairs for some MerseyRail action! My memory of the gen got mixed up, expecting 507017 for some reason, but winner 508139 is scored on a Bus Stop Bash to Liverpool Central. From here we change to the Northern line, hoping for some good luck for Fishquinn. We take dud 507006 to Bootle Oriel Road, my final MerseyRail shack, finally it's scored! Super Dud 507016 is taken back to Sandhills, as Fishquinn needs the Ormskirk branch, and we identify a possible filler move involving the walk from Rice Lane to Walton. Google Maps confirms it's a 5 minute walk, and he scores 508125 on the leap. Platform to platform it is about 6 minutes walk, not bad at all. Next up is 508124, and I remember just how far it is to Ormskirk! After a PNB, we re-join 508124 and it becomes a Super Dud for me.

We bail at Maghull so Fishquinn [for the purposes of typing this, I'm now abbreviating that to FQ - Ed] can score the shack, and 508111 is taken back to Town Green, a scored 508 for FQ as well as a shack score. 507002 is another score for FQ, which brings it one step away from Super Dud status, with 508111 now in the League of Super Duds. The journey back to Sandhills feels like a long one, and I devour a ham roll kindly made by my Mum this morning [I also have a sandwich too, which as I type this I need to eat! - Ed] which silenced the stomach. As we roll into Sandhills, I spy 507017, which clears the MerseyRail fleet for sight at long last! Thing is, it was meant to be sat in Southport at this time, so much examining of RTT occurs today as the afternoon wore on to figure out moves. Next up was 507024 to Central, another score for FQ. Moorfields' platform 1 is currently closed for refurbishment, so we go through non-stop, an odd feeling for sure. We decide to examine the Wirral line, in case 507029 has also not stuck to the plan. We get 508134 to James Street first, pushing it closer to Super Dud for me, then 507026 to Wallasey Grove Road for FQ to score the shack. A tight +2 is only just made onto Super Dud 507005 back to Wallasey Village, another FQ shack score, and in case 507029 turns up we switch platforms.

Back to Grove Road on 507019, it again becoming closer to that magical membership. A more manageable +4 this time gets us back onto 507026, with a successful application to the League of Super Duds. We bail at Birkenhead North, on a prospective leap, and I turn 507013 into a Super Dud on a leap to Leasowe, which is a shack score for FQ. Super Dud 508138 takes us back east, and FQ bails at Birkenhead Park as he needs to get back to Bidston for a Borderlands bash. I was going to join him, but I just can't turn down the chance to get that 507! I feel bad for leaving him on his own mind, but as it turned out it was just as well I didn't go home via Wrexham, as an issue on the Borderlands line was causing delays! It's a tense journey to Liverpool Central, as I just don't know whether 507017 will produce or not. I move it like crazy after alighting, and I make it just before it arrives with 507023 on the 1543 from Southport. 507017 is therefore winner number 2 today, leaving just 507029 to get out of the MerseyRail fleet! I bail at Brunswick, obviously a dud shack, and 508130+508136 take me back to Central, 508136 getting one step closer.

I move it fast here as it's 1640 by the time I'm upstairs, and my last available move homewards is the 1704 from Lime Street. I'm outside Lime Street by 1644 though, and although 507029 didn't produce I'm happy with how today went. I join 350253 on the 1704 and get Tech's Mobile Disco back on while I update the trip report, which takes until just after Winsford. Before I know it we're in Crewe, and I try that Nescafe Alegeria [I think that's how you spell it! - Ed] from WHSmith for £1. I see they've got a good selection of railway fleet books here, including some for multiple European countries. Oh how I was tempted to get the Italy and the Austria ones, an insight into how much I want to go abroad again! 175112 is taking me home tonight, and I was lucky to find a seat on this busy service. The coffee's not bad either, especially for the money! Once back in Hereford after a slow journey, it's time to get some food and a pint, then the bus home. So some stats:

Winners: 2
New sights: 4
Shack scores: 1

Rail fares: £12.90 (after taking off the RTVs!)
Bus fares: £6.20
General expenditure: £13.29 (before Hereford)
Total: £32.39 (before Hereford)

Cheapest bash I've had in a while!

Congrats on clearing the shacks on Merseyrail, just Meols Cop left in the Saveaway area IIRC.

Plus getting that final 508 (although a very tiny distance under it's wheels from Lime Street to Central!) plus your 2nd last 507. I suspect we will probably get to hear Quinn's version of events some point in July ;)

Good write up once again Tech - I enjoyed the MR trains when I was on them on October. Congrats on clearing the shacks and the 508s; sure it won't be long before the last 507 is cleared.

Out of interest - what takes a unit to super dud status?

Wow, Chicago sounds excellent for railways! If I ever get to go, I'll be posting on here seeking gen, although I might also be getting a fleet book for locos if I was to do it.

I've never come across one i.e. the equivalent of an 'ABC' or Platform 5 stock book, but 'number collecting' isn't really part of the hobby over there. What I do to ID locos is look up the number on an enthusiast roster list for the railroad e.g. the ones here - http://www.thedieselshop.us/

Saveaways are another ticket with a daft name in the system for different zones and so on!

Loved your American bash report (some nice photos).

Quinn is slowly getting caught up it seems, but if his report from yesterday surfaces before July I'll be shocked

The chainage on 508139 is enough for me, I'll probably end up getting it again one day anyway!

I managed to get a saveaway issued at Andover & Woking before :)

Rainford is in the area, easier to grab heading from Kirkby towards Wigan. Sadly the same can't be said for Meols Cop which (on a Saturday) is easier towards Southport then away from Southport, although I'm sure you could link up a bus back to Southport :)

Read day 2 and 3, first off all I must say those shots from the empire state building...HOLY MOSES! :o!! That's a view and a half!

The shot inside the Occulus looks friggin HUGE as well! Not sure if it's as massive as it looks, but often with photo's they look medium or large then in reality it's 3 times the size as what you picture!

I've only seen those Kawasaki trains in Railworks, didn't even know they made metro trains to be honest until it came out for the train sim!

That metro 7 day rider sounds like a bargain actually, and thank you very much for the tips too, the ZIP code and the fact you can get free maps and guides there anyway.

I'd like to visit that 9/11 centre, as you say you can't imagine it until you are there, much like you can't picture the reality of the Calais mess until you have seen it, and I can vouch for that, I never knew what it's like until I was caught up in it!

Will be reading the rest, but still jealous of course !!

Fowler9 - On a note of Norwegian, I checked my book, they are mostly LN serials that are former EI reg (EI-LNE becoming LN-LNE etc) however there is some EI- reg ones that are fomer LN serials, so not sure what the deal is especially as the new ones are rolling out with EI- serials anyway

When I started spotting a couple of years ago I didn't know it wasn't as simple with country codes! There's one for Aeroflot too, and other liners in Russia, that use VP and VQ codes.

Apparently the Russian Government charge a huge tax fee for Russian operators using non-russian built aircraft registered with the country code RA, so they are registered out of the country (VP is some island I think) so you'll find the Airbuses and Boeing's are VP/VQ's, and the Ilyushin's, Tupolev's etc are RA.

The Occulus is massive, it has to be said, not sure the photos do it justice!

Glad you've enjoyed the read of the NYC trip so far, hope the rest is a good read for you too!

Good write up once again Tech - I enjoyed the MR trains when I was on them on October. Congrats on clearing the shacks and the 508s; sure it won't be long before the last 507 is cleared.

Out of interest - what takes a unit to super dud status?

Thanks!

A train becomes Super Dud when each coach in the formation is travelled in. So a 150 will become Super Dud after travelling in both the 52 and 57 coaches.

You got lucky with 507017! It went off diagram to cover for a failure at Southport but luckily ended up back in its original diagram again!

sounds fun, no saveaways at crewe? Amazing. Good idea getting 5xs in now as although no new fleet ordered with tendering underway any major fails probs woant now be fixed. What were the virgin r t vs for? Assume northerns were from the S and C trip?

There must be a special way to make it come up. 50x units have been getting done slowly for a while, although like you and the rest of us I wonder when the new fleet will be ordered.

The RTV from Virgin was due to a farce when the OHLE was subject to an attack by a plastic object in February. The handling of the situation by Virgin was absolutely appalling, so they were in receipt of a very disappointed Delay Repay form, so they obviously felt it fair to fully refund my WMDR!

Northern's RTV was from the S and C aye, then one from LM for the delay on Polesworth Day!

Thought there must have been a failure in Southport, lucky indeed with 507017 then!

An excellent move there, I always enjoy a day on that network.
Congratulations on clearing the Merseyrail stations but I presume with just the one 507 to get you'll be heading back before too long.

Great report Tech, you're doing a lot better than I am with the Merseyrail fleet as I've been spending much of the last year focusing on Northern Rail, although I hope to get a ride on the rest of the current fleet before the new trains arrive. I still need 507029 myself, I must get around to ticking that and the 18 other 507s (and the 15 508s) I need at some point.
