Is platform one considered prestigious at some stations?

Whilst looking at some splendid photos of an HST in Sheffield on Flickr the commentary caught my interest:

"The early morning Master Cutler service from Sheffield to London St. Pancras used to be a very special and important train, always leaving from platform 1 but over the years it started to lose it's status virtually becoming just another standard service and moving to platform 5, then in 1987 it was decided to raise the Cutlers profile once more. it was revamped and the entire HST set received the brand new Intercity Executive livery which saw the introduction of the Swift logo, there was brand new Swift branded cutlery and Wedgewood pottery and everyone in first class received a free copy of the Yorkshire Post. plus it regained it's platform 1 departure"

I know that the existing Master Cutler rarely departs from platform one these days and there is no indication that the platform has any form of special status either. However are there any stations that continue to treat platform one as particularly special?

London/Birmingham Pendolinos seem to generally arrive and depart from platform 1 at Glasgow Central but I'm not sure if that's just a happy coincidence, based on platform length, etc.

You've fallen into the classic trap by using the word "prestigious".

It's a word that everyone needs to know the meaning of, and perhaps think to oneself that something may well be "prestigious".

But

The moment it is written down or said, it automatically means whatever was being described as being "prestigous" isn't.

(Is there still a waiting list for the Car Park on the former Platform 1 at Stirling?)

Platform 1 at Sheffield is particularly easy to access - directly from the concourse.

Yes, I think the "prestige" is simply the convenience. It also harks back to the days of having a "Hausbahnsteig" and a "Nebenbahnsteig" as is common in Germany, and exists on some Scottish single lines where the non-concourse-connected platform is used only when there are going to be two trains there. (In Germany it's often narrow and only reached via a level crossing)

It's because of pathing over the flat junction in the station throat. Pendos 'turn left' when departing Glasgow Central, so they're platformed in the left-most part of the station (from a southbound perspective) so as not to cut in front of any other services.

Certainly not as prestigious at Leeds station

The jackpot there is either Platform 6 or Platform 8!

A platform offering direct flat access may be considered convenient, but I doubt it's anything to do with prestige! Or being numbered 1.

Platform 1 at Mcr Picc offers Pacers to Rose Hill!
Platform 1 at Crewe is halfway to Stafford.
Platform 1 at Chester is the bay for the Crewe shuttle.

I'm sure there are Platforms 1 which are little-used bays.

Platform 1 at Lancaster and Wigan NW are both little-used Up through platforms: I believe Lancaster's is used primarily as a northbound bay and Wigan NW's is presumably only used by traffic from Preston heading via Hindley.

Edit - realised Lancaster's platform numbers are the reverse of the above, but that still leaves p1 as the rarely used Morecambe bay platform, and 3/4 as the main WCML platforms.

Preston has platforms 1&2 as Northern's island. The main platform is 3&4 with the pub and shops on it, in addition P4 could be consider more prestigious for having this.

Platform 1 at Colchester will give you EMUs to Clacton. Hardly prestigious, I would think.

Stirling and Aberdeen don't even have a platform 1.

Although they have been known to depart from platforms 9-11 as well.

To call platform 1 "prestigious" is going a bit far. Certainly, platform 1 is often used at smaller stations for services in the "main" direction of travel - for example in the Greater Glasgow area, Platform 1 is almost always used by trains traveling to the city and Platform 2 for trains traveling from the city.

There are instances where Platform 1 is generally used for the longer-distance, more "prestigious" services, like in Glasgow Central with the Pendolinos using platforms 1 and 2. However there are also many examples where Platform 1 is far from prestigious. Glasgow Queen Street's P1 is a short bay, largely used by Anniesland shuttles. Bristol Temple Meads' P1 is also a short bay, that from what I've seen is in the dingiest part of the station and could hardly be considered prestigious. Aberdeen's Platform 1 is currently a dilapidated siding that's not in passenger use. Stirling's is a car park. Haymarket's Platform 1 is mostly used by arriving passengers. Edinburgh Waverley's is usually used by local services (and is not very busy). I could go on...

I'd like to question use of the word "prestigious" though. To me it implies importance, and Virgin's London-Glasgow trains are a vitally important transport link, but I'm sure that a passenger traveling on the Cathcart Circle will see their little 314 as being just as important to them.

The much less glamorous reality of platform numbering is that platforms are generally numbered sequentially (or at least there is or has been some method to the numbering, even if it's not immediately obvious). Trains are put onto a platform that they will fit into, and that is the most sensible for the signallers, looking at their journey through the station and the potential for conflicting movements (I'm sure I'm oversimplifying this - if any rail staff want to correct this please feel free!). As has been said, the reason the Pendolinos in Glasgow use P1-2 is that the platforms are long enough to hold them, and provide a route to the WCML with minimal conflicting movements. Similarly, in Inverness, the Chieftain uses Platform 1 largely due to the platform length above any other concerns.

The "prestige" of having a certain service use Platform 1 will generally not come into the equation.

Platform 1 at Bristol Temple Meads is very prestigious. Used most often for services to and from the glorious destinations of Avonmouth and Severn Beach. Admittedly it does sometimes see use by prestigious 4 car Voyagers to Manchester.

Platform 1 at Bristol Parkway doesn't exist. And at Taunton it is not in passenger use.

Matthew and Son had to run to platform 1 as sung by Cat Stevens.
Are there any other platforms given credit in songs?
Would Platform 6, or any other number, have had the same impact?

Surely IanXC has got it. At many stations an attempt is made to make the trains that are viewed as most important arrive or depart at the platform that is most easily accessible from the concourse (after ruling out any platforms that are too short or unsuitable for track/signalling/traffic reasons).

Platform 1 at Coventry is the "preferred" platform for Southbound Pendolinos, being step-free with the main concourse. It is (unusually) even stated as such in the Timetable Planning Rules.

(I'm not aware of such a statement for anywhere else, other than Platforms 3-7 at Euston being preferred for Virgin's West Midlands services).

Weymouth (admittedly a smaller station) has the heart of the wessex services depart from platform 1 (generally a 150 of some sort) whereas the fastest trains to London depart from platform 3 (generally a 444) which is a much more prestigious service.

Parkway should eventually regain its platform 1 when the back downside platform is put in. Platforms 1 and 2 were renamed 2 and 3 at the last rebuild (upside extra platform), in anticipation of the future platform 1 being built.

That's broadly it.

At some stations the platform at one edge is going to be the most accessible, at other stations one in the middle will be.

And many stations have at one time or another been rebuilt over the years.

Charing Cross - main line departures have been from platforms 5 / 6 as long as I can remember.

Waterloo (main) - main line departures generally used to run from one of the central platforms either side of the cab road (although before the post WW1 reconstruction, platform 1 (of the central station) was the principal main line departure platform

Platform 1 at Clapham Junction had no rails for many years - the original platform 1 still does not, and a new platform 1 has been created out of part of platform 2...

It is more to do with the first class lounge than anything.

Never mind platform 1, despite the rebuild of Liverpool St platform 9 for Norwich still seems right somehow.

To add to the list: the only major London station to have a "house" platform 1 is Paddington. At Victoria it was 2 (for royalty and the Night Ferry but 8 for the Golden Arrow), Kings Cross 8 York was 8 (now 5), Reading used to be 4....

I am not sure if "special" or "prestigious" are appropriate terms to use, but I have no objection to you considering an easy to access platform being assigned that status, though I am unsure how this would be 'indicated'?
However are there any stations that continue to treat platform one as particularly special?...
I'm not sure I agree with how you are wording it, but Glenrothes is a good examples of a station where most trains are booked to use Platform 1 for accessibility reasons.

In the case of Carrbridge, I guess Platform 2 would count as 'special' because that's the platform which is more easily accessible. The Up Chieftain (Sundays Only) is shown as booked to use Platform 1, but in practice the signaller puts it into Platform 2.

Major trains from King's Cross depart from Platform 0 or 1. York's Platform 1 is a bay for local services to Selby, Hull and Pontefract, the main platforms there are 3, 5 & 9.

As has been mentioned, Sheffield platform 1 is the most convenient for the concourse. However it is on the down side of the station, so up trains rarely leave from it, hence the prestige of the Master Cutler getting special treatment. It is also one of the newer platforms, the current platform 5 was originally in the equivalent position with relation to the original concourse
