Again as sad as the huge job losses are we need to take into context what the problems are here. On the Beeb News it was said that poor exports due to a strong pounds and China dumping vast quantities of steel on the market due to their own economic slow down is to blame. We cannot force other countries to buy our steel over Chinese steel, yes we could ban Chinese imports of steel but considering the huge amount of businesses that rely on other products coming out of China that would be suicide for us. The one thing the Govt could do is stipulate that the Govt will give contracts out to companies that buy British. But still there is only so much steel the country needs. If these plants were nationalised to save the jobs then the taxpayer would be subsidising the production of steel at a loss. We need to consider what the long term future demand for steel in this country is and ensure that demand is met in this country. Apart from that we would just be subsidising cheaper steel for other countries.
