Trivia; which stations do better at weekend than midweek?

Obviously stations that are there which specifically open to allow fans access to stadia (ie Man United's ground/stadium) don't count; but that aside there must be stations near out-of-town shopping centres or such like that have greater footfall on Saturdays and possibly Sundays than they would any other day of the week?

I'd imagine Meadowhall, and possibly Whitehaven as well, the latter being very well used by people who are, let's say, a bit intoxicated...

Good shout - Hope and Edale, and yes, I've been one of those ramblers! Windermere (and therefore Oxenholme) may also be busier at weekends, certainly outside the school holiday season?

If stations that are there which specifically open to allow fans access to stadia are excluded, I'd guess the above should be excluded. Looks like you found a loophole in the definition. However, I expect the loophole to be retrospectively corrected shortly

Its worth mentioning here that the local stations are busy with commuters during the week so I'm not sure that walkers heading for Kinder Scout etc make that much of a difference on a normal weekend weather wise. However on an exceptionally good summers day you will certainly see a significant spike in numbers on a Saturday or Sunday.

What's the obvious reason? If you're looking for a nice day out in the Northern Dales / Fells then Horton, Ribblehead, Dent and Garsdale are much better bets in my opinion.

Girvan and Stranraer do better on saturdays. Stranraer has its best service on Sundays to Glasgow (well until December, when it is axed) but has fewer trains.

An example that springs to mind is Lakenheath, which actually has its most frequent service (three trains each way per day) on Sundays, as opposed to one a day on other days, or did last time I checked.

Newquay gets 7 long distance trains in mid summer saturdays to and from London with FGW or from The North with XC.

It gets just one direct train from London and return on weekdays, the rest are local units working up an down the branchline, as are all winter services.

I'd possibly add Batley and Mirfield to that list in spite of their weekday commuter market... Or maybe it's just that there isn't the same big drop in use between 0830 and 1730 at weekends... The ale trail crowd makes a lot more noise, too!

Rugeley Town, Hednesford and Cannock as London Midland can justify a half hourly service on Saturdays throughout the day but not mid week.

Uttoxeter gets a fairly large amount of passengers some weekends with race goers although some race meetings happen during the week so I am not sure if there is more at weekends overall.

Entwistle is a possible contender. There are few houses within close walking distance of the station and for weekday Park & Ride commuters from the surrounding district, difficult road access and tricky parking at Entwistle station, plus it being the first station outside the TfGM fare area means Bromley Cross may well be a significantly cheaper & more convenient option if you're travelling to destinations in Greater Manchester.

At weekends there will be more walkers and the like visiting the Turton moors and reservoirs, plus the popular Strawbury Duck pub adjacent the station (I used Entwistle for the latter purpose in years gone by).

I wouldn't be surprised if there were some weeks when Box Hill & Westhumble, Holmwood, Ockley and maybe a few stations on the North Downs Line through Surrey had better weekend custom, at least per day or per train, than that on weekdays.

Dumfries, Annan and Gretna have more services on Saturday than any other day. Whether that means a greater number of passengers, I don't know.

Definitely Boxhill id say because of the cyclists.

Cleethorpes? There's not an awful lot of commuter traffic that way, I'd have thought, but it gets a decent footfall on a weekend, especially in the summer.

North Berwick has a regular hourly service throughout Saturdays but not during the week although I am not sure if this is down to extra passenger numbers.

The Trent Valley London Midland services always seem busier at weekends with people visiting London than they do during the week.

I was going to start this thread.

I'd imagine Windermere, the S&C, the Cumbrian and Cambrian Coast Lines and the Bentham Line to have better usage at weekends.
