The way I see it is services are overcrowded across the country (potentially with people being left behind every day!) so we should be using every possible alternative to give extra capacity. It may not be suitable long term but it's a quick fix that can be provided to give extra capacity short term. There's no excuse to have spare coaches sat around doing nothing when people are being left behind.
Sure there's probably more suitable routes for the 37+Mk2's to be used on but I expect this is probably the best option operationally with DRS being based in Carlisle

The stock which finished at Barrow on Saturday apparently returned to Kingmoor as 5C32 at 18.50 via Carnforth.

This morning 2C33 the 05.46 from Barrow appears to have been DMU with the LHCS starting from Carlisle on 2C40 at 08.42.

One of the LHCS sets was only three coaches late last week - was this being sorted at Kingmoor over the weekend?

Yes, indeed that was the issue quoted. 37688 & 37423 reported on 2C40, with 37606 having been swapped out.

2C33 was a 156, btw.

Dare I ask what units are filling in between the loco-hauled services ?

Needless to say, they've managed to avoid the services which would be useful to me with the loco hauled.

Probably a silly question but does anyone know if the 10.40 from Preston on Wednesday will be formed of 37s?

Cheers

Do you mean the 10:04? If so then barring any failures yes.

It's over 30 years since I last went on a tourist trip on the railways and fancy having a day out with a round trip from Bamber Bridge to Preston, Barrow, Carlisle and then the S&C to Leeds. I would be using Northern Rail's £12.50 Day Ranger for this trip.

I've looked up the times using National Rail Enquiries and come up with a possible schedule but I'm a bit concerned about a 5 minute connection at Barrow. What sort of success rate has this connection provided in the first weeks of operation? If I miss the connection I have an even tighter one at Carlisle for the S&C service to Leeds!! Eeek.

Here's my plan..

0920 BMB - PRE 0931
1004 PRE - BIF 1133
1138 BIF - CAR 1426 (1236 BIF - CAR 1506)*
1506 CAR - LDS 1740
1806 LDS - PRE 1947
2000 PRE - BMB 2009

BMB - Bamber Bridge
PRE - Preston
BIF - Barrow in Furness
CAR - Carlisle
LDS - Leeds

I have no planned day to travel but it will be on the Monday to Friday services and I'll decide to do the trip on the morning after a weather report. Hoping for a sunny dry day. Fingers crossed. However, I wondered if the Northern Guard is likely to accept my completed application form and allow me to travel to get my ticket issued at Preston and saving me the £3.00 cost of a single?

It could be fun!!

The ranger is only available from a staffed ticket office, so unless you get a kind gripper you'll need that single. Unless of course you get it in advance.

Enjoy your first tourist day on the railway in many years!

Thanks. I'm really looking forward to it. Especially to be sat by a window with a view of the Irish Sea. I think the last tour I did by rail was back in 1980, a Freedom of Scotland week railrover.

Those were the days. Steam heating to Inverness and then a trip across to Kyle in the observation coach. Oh, and being being offered a cheeky whisky by a generous Scotsman! :lol:

Tuesday 2nd June

37423 = 2C32 0515 Carlisle - Preston
37688 = 2C47 1004 Preston - Barrow
37688 = 2C41 1437 Barrow - Carlisle
37423 = 2C42 1737 Carlisle - Barrow

37611 = 2C33 0546 Barrow - Carlisle
37419 = 2C40 0842 Carlisle - Barrow
37611 = 2C49 1138 Barrow - Sellafield

37611 shut down at Millom. 37419 pushed it to Sellafield where the train was pined. 37609 replace 611 and the return working started at Sellafield -

37419 = 2C34 1611 Sellafield - Barrow
37609 = 2C47 1731 Barrow - Carlisle

Wednesday 3rd June

Diagram 1

37402 = 2C32 0515 Carlisle - Preston
37606 = 2C47 1004 Preston - Barrow
37606 = 2C41 1437 Barrow - Carlisle
37402 = 2C42 1737 Carlisle - Barrow

Diagram 2

37688 = 2C33 0546 Barrow - Workington*
37423 = 2C40 0935 Workington* - Barrow
37688 = 2C49 1138 Barrow - Carlisle
37423 = 2C34 1435 Carlisle - Barrow
37688 = 2C47 1731 Barrow - Carlisle

*Pined at Workington due to a broken rail in the Dalston area.

Subject to the usual caveats.

606 just swapped for 609 on the 1737 as the unpowered "tail".

The day I used it the 10.04 was down about 12 minutes arriving in Barrow and the connection was held. For the record on that occasion the delay was caused by being held at Preston to allow late running WCML services through first, that along with another delay north of Barrow due to animals reported on the line meant the 2 services stayed approx 10-15 late throughout.

The daft bit was that they had the ex-Preston arrive at Barrow on the main platform (1) while the connection was waiting on the island, if they had put the late arrival beside the departure it would have saved a few minutes wait and a stampede of desperate cranks down the underpass trying to beat each other to the front coach.

It was a lovely trip, a scenic line on civilized comfortable stock rather than the endurance challenge that doing it on a pacer or sprinter would have been.

Reading this thread I wasn't clear what stock was operating Carlisle-Barrow-Lancaster/Preston trains beyond BIF, so for anyone who like me was wondering I was at Arnside yesterday and the 1004 PRE - BIF was two 37-4s plus coaching stock (one ex Virgin Mk2 plus blue carriages). This is the return of 0515 CAR - PRE. It then seems to potter off the Barrow CS until 14:28 beyond that I've no idea. RTT seems to show this is the regular diagramming. I'll be trying this soon.

The track arrangement at Barrow means that services from the Preston direction can only arrive into platform one.

Sorry if this has been reported before. DRS have a 2 year contract for LHSs and Northern are training their drivers to take over this operation.

9707 is at Carlisle and 9705 will be released from RVEL fairly soon.
Is there any update on when the DBSOs are likely to enter service on the Cumbrian Coast? I'll be undertaking a trip over the route in a month's time and I am just curious as to whether it is still likely to be top and tailed or push-pull operation.

I assume that we will be forewarned of their imminent use by a period of driver training on the DBSOs before they enter passenger service.

It is a nice journey along the coast, even in less than nice weather. Sure was when I did it aboard a 156 on either my 2011 and 2012 ALR trip, probably the latter, and it was a rather dark grey sky with the odd shower of rain too.

It's been a long time since your last adventure then! Have the Chiltern, and more recently ScotRail, 68s not appealed? Certainly they're going down well with a lot of people, obviously there's still a huge difference compared with anything EE but hey ho!

Travelling along near Sellafield in a 156 during a raging storm is pretty good as well.

37688 and 37419 on the 1004 ex-Preston today.

37402+37609 on the other one, the same as the rake finished yesterday

419 then threw a fit later on in the day I think and the 1737 ex-Carlisle was caped.

Will the use of DBSOs reduce reliability due to one loco working all day instead of working one direction and being towed dead in the other?

I think you've answered your own question regarding 50 year old 37/4s ....... I'd also be concerned about 'teething' issues with the DBSOs, unless someone can tell me they've had extensive testing and had chance to iron out the 'gremlins'?

In many ways the Cumbrian Coast is ideal for this kind of operation as it sometimes seems to exist in its own little Twilight Zone of timekeeping due to the number of request stops- try going all the way round on a Saturday afternoon when everybody wants to go to the next big town! Hoping to get across next weekend with a Northern day ranger.

There are a lot of stops, but how many of them are request?

This is probably a really daft question, but how does the guard tell the driver if someone wants to get off at a request stop? I can see how you do it in an MU!

From what I can see in the last few days, they seem to treat all stops as normal ones.

Right. First impressions.

Lose the damned window stickers.

Whichever clown though it would be a good idea to cover up half of the window space on one of the most scenic routes in the country, needs serious re-educating.

Other than that, the seat is heaven and a vast improvement
