I noticed one of the test trains a couple of weeks ago was one way only in the schedule, I guess they use ad-hoc intstructions from control for the other leg.

Anyway, no sign of any movement yet, 25 minutes after it was due to start, so Maybe it's off for tonight. I'm off to bed, anyway.

Just left Allerton, 27 late!

And now approaching Edge Hill on livesig. Clever stuff this!

There's now a second train appeared on the system

Just left Allerton, 27 late!

Hope you're sending this, camera at the ready, from the frozen wastes of Wigan NW or Bryn.

I'm from LDECR territory, but my ancestors came from Woodhouse Eaves in sunny Leicestershire; they all left the area in the diaspora of WW1.

Kind regards

Dave

PS Have you been taking photos of developments over recent months?

Hi All,

In the lastest testing for the Lpl - Wigan Electrification scheme, could anyone explain the term/location 'St Helens Dgl' as listed in the Realtimes Train Lpl-Wgn 319 assignment for the 19th Mar., please - have we got a secret station ?

St Helens Down Goods Line, which to me is either the crossover at the station or the small loop next to the Down line at St Helens.

Oooer.......
A) By dint of a recent notice (see Dave's NW2 Electrification Flickr site) Electrics can't use the station's crossover points because there is no provision for this included in the new OHLE at this point and
B) Whilst I totally agree the small loop is included in the track diagram for the station - in practice it is completely overgrown with trees/vegetation !! See any recent photos of St.Helens Central northern approach & SB

They ran, 5Z18 dep Lime St. 0007 and 5Z19 dep Lime St. 0019.5.

At first I thought they were going to run as multiple as they were both in the same platform (8) at Lime St. But no, they ran separately.

I watched 5Z18 arrive at Wigan NW from a distance. Was hoping to get a picture but I couldn't get access on to the station at that time of night.

It's definitely St Helens Down Goods Line but whether the 319 will use it is another question. Could be the loop at Pilkington's as well perhaps? Only ones I can think of.

Strange. Checking my TrackMaps 4, it shows the dgl as part of the Pilks oil farm spur, but the oil farm hasn't been used for a number of years and certainly isn't wired. Going to Central in a few mins to see if late access is possible for the 0020 run so will also check the situation at the Burtonhead Rd bridge.

Checked. Nope; doesn't look as if there's any wiring crossover at StH dgl

This morning's test run is over, and the unit is on its way back to Allerton. Let's hope all the tests were passed.

I wonder what are the chances of a one-off passenger working so that they can say the line is open? (I'm assuming we won't get regular runs until May.)

If it were me I would run an enthusiasts special.

Dave (LDECRexile) and myself managed to catch two 319 passes at Eccleston Park 0000hrs Wigan bound and 0055 hours Liverpool bound. As is to be expected with these things the timings were again somewhat flexible. Visuals to follow.

Hows about starting a limited 319 service on 3rd April 2015 - The 319 is dead : Long Live The 319 !!

---------------------------------
FROM THE MERSEYTRAVEL WEBSITE

Bus number: 319
Run by: South Lancs Travel
Going between: St Helens, Rainford and Ormskirk
Date service changes: 3 April 2015
What's changing? Service will be withdrawn from 3 April and will no longer run from this date.

----------------------------------

...or maybe come back St.Helens & Runcorn Gap Railway?

Presumably as 319s/trained crews become available they'll be used first on the remaining weekday Manchester Airport diagram, then the weekend ones? We may not see many on the Wigan line until May.

Why is that? As I understand electrics are cheaper to run than diesel so you'd think they'd want them in service asap. Are the units not available yet, or drivers not trained?

According to the new Rail magazine, a third diagram is supposed to start running before May. Of course Rail aren't always the most reliable source of information.

I don't think there is a third MIA diagram, from memory, that's interworked.

Which makes one wonder why have they ran MENTOR and the 319s on LIV/WGN test recently? Maybe to be able to sign off the electrification side of Phase 2?

What Northern do with the wires once made available is not NR's problem.
NR will also want to tick the box called March for first electric train.
Contractors will want paying (no doubt a lot of money), and the NR maintenance people will need to mobilise.
Don't forget Victoria is still to come in Phase 2 (hopefully in April), plus the missing bits of functionality (AT etc).

Interesting...

Just found this quote in RTM by Rob Warnes, planning and programmes director at Northern Rail when asked about 319s and the MIA run

-------------------------------------------------------------
“When the Wigan route goes live at the back end of March or early April, we’ll then look to extend to three trains in service and then gradually ramp up to eight trains in service by May,” he said."
-------------------------------------------------------------

(my highlighting)
