Graffiti over the christmas shutdown is nothing unusual and happens all over the place every single year all over the place, taking advantage of lots of time and not many staff being around! The BTP are always on heightened alert to this type of crime every year.

Couple of our 442's were done in Hove yard. Seems while there are lights and CCTV, someone was looking the other way.

Yes, I heard about that. Also at another set of sidings used by Southern, too (Metro area), though I won't mention where in case it inspires any more issues. You probably got an email which mentioned it. Suffice to say that I know of at least these 2 locations, and there may be more (Tonbridge always used to be a hotspot, and I think one or two Southern units were there over Christmas, though I didn't hear any bad news from there).

If we had a railway system with the luxury of sufficient amounts of rolling stock to allow for some maintenance other than the bare essentials, then it might very well be possible to make a point of stamping this unsightly nonsense out by removing it before the affected vehicles enter service. As it is, TOCs have little choice other than to let vandalised stock out into traffic most of the time, and make plans to clean it up later.

We've suffered this moronic crap for 30 years now, since it first crossed the Atlantic. Will it ever go out of fashion?

The way I see it is that 'human rights' legislation prevents it from being stamped out for once and for all <(

Could you elaborate on this?

Yes indeed, and in more recent times (mid 20th century) you could see plenty of graffiti in areas of dereliction as well as the occasional proclamation of a favourite band or a political statement in a more public place. But this idiotic 'tagging' on seemingly any suitable vertical surface, repeated ad nauseam, came over from the States in the mid-1980s and doesn't seem to show any sign of abating (together with blippy, clattering electronic noise which passes for music and rap which passes for singing - it would appear that it's all inter-related).

And the Daily Wail's circulation shows that it doesn't represent a minority view, unfortunately ;)

The justification used by people such as TOX for such actions always puts me in mind of the early 1900's when the noted Satanist Aleister Crowley at his self-appointed Abbey of Thelema which had the mantra..." Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law"..<(

Interestingly, I have yet to see tags on cars or vans, even those parked up for weeks at a time. I've never quite worked out why - anyone any ideas?

Would you care to explain which part of "human rights legislation" prevents it being stamped out?

Well what can we do with the perpetrators once they're caught? How can we form a deterrent to others who are thinking of doing the same? The only thing our legal authorities can do is effectively play a giant game of 'Whack-A-Mole'.

er, you may be correct, but what's it got to do with "human rights legislation"?

You only need to look across the Atlantic to see that being "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" is a fallacy. We have the highest prison population in Europe but these things still happen. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I'm pretty sure that hanging and flogging isn't it!

And again, the Human Rights Act is often cited as a problem by ultra-conservaties, the facts don't really back this up. I wouldn't want to live in a country where human rights were trampled willy-nilly.

So why France and not here I wonder?

I'd say it's cultural rather than to do with laws and justice systems. Certain parts of London have vans covered in London also, whilst much of Eastern Europe has a far more widespread graffiti problem than the UK, and this is in countries which have not, or have only recently, adopted European notions of Human Rights.

Now that would be an appropriate sentence for some of these delinquents....

The level of wibble on this thread. The Ukipers/Daily Mail simpletons must be rubbing themselves sore.

Some people spray painted a train!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! - They didn’t go on a murderous rampage killing 15 innocent school children, 3 nuns and the Dalai Lama. Get a grip and some perspective!

There was a Thameslink 319 I saw earlier with somewhat faded paintwork - possibly one that had been the subject of a tagging attack at some point that has had it removed?

Quite a few are I'm afraid, I'm sure there must be 10 or more of the 313s in that state unless I've seen the same ones all the same way today!

The graffiti which was applied this weekend must have been as a result of Sony's on-line gaming network being down.

They couldn't face life without their playstations so they had to do something!

No - it is not as bad as mass murder - just an example of mindless yobs who think they have the right to damage other people's property. Would you like them to graffiti your residence / property ?

no clearly not - but would I rather the police spent their dwindling resources chasing down armed robbers and murderers.

If my house was sprayed up I certainly wouldn’t be suggesting, as many on here seem to want, the people involved should be strung up by their goolies. I’d rather save that punishment for a serious crime. In fact a suitable punishment might be have the little scroats clean up their mess.

I am sure the people involved will be caught quite quickly. They have , after all, left their "signature" behind

To right!

yeah right on! wooh

The point remains that the level of froth and wibble expressed on this thread is embarrassing. It is like some frenzy of righteousness expressing outrage and more convoluted and vastly disproportionate punishments for a minor offence

God forbid that someone might do something to a train! Get some perspective.

it is bad (and criminal) but not the end of the world. The service still ran. A good acid wash will have that gunk off in no time.
.

Will knacker the paint work. What they need to do is cover it with a protective film like the Chela guard. You then use a liquid/gel and it comes off with just some human effort in about an hour depending how big a paint it is. Its not cheap to apply to trains but as they have only 2 it may be worth their while.

I have only took it off walls before and it is a right PITA!

My punishment would be to make the little scroats destroy thier own work, whilst wearing a nice pink jacket saying "I am a criminal".
