Reports have come in tonight that the temporary containers at Dawlish have been breached during the storm battering the region.

Residents in the town have been evacuated as social media reports suggest at least some of the containers have gone during the strong wind and waves.

The line was originally washed away in the last fierce storms and will not reopen until at least March 18.

Shipping containers filled with stones form a temporary sea wall.

This picture taken by the Devon and Cornwall police helicopter shows work progressing on repairs to the railway line at Dawlish yesterday.

The crew took the picture yesterday, February 13 and tweeted it via the @NPAS_Exeter account.

The line was washed away in the last fierce storms and will not reopen until at least March 18.

The breach has cut the rail link between Plymouth and London.

Oh dear, for both the railway line and the residents - a great pity - Southerly winds are just what was NOT needed....

Trouble is in the current weather that a stray shipping container and a few rocks can do even more damage..

The only silver lining is this is considered the last damaging storm in terms of the coastal flooding. Inland flooding expected to continue for some time.

I suspect that six weeks has now become 7-8. Very bad news indeed after all the hard work and effort that has been put in by Network Rail. From what i can see the containers have done their job. It is where the containers aren't that is the problem!

Fair play, it was a quick and ingenious fix. And no doubt things would be a lot worse had they not been there.

Exactly, and the initial 6 weeks did actually include damage from future storms so we might be okay in terms of their original timing. Only the morning will tell. But BBC weather today said this is the last storm in terms of wind so hopefully they will be able to get a good go at it from now on.

Who knows though i am honestly more worried about the houses that were already unstable, i sense some may no longer be there tomorrow!

It isn't over yet - it may be where the containers(s) is/are that is a greater problem!

Looks like a very small section. Winds are set to halve by next high tide so hopefully that should be the worst of the damage over with. The camera is showing the waves at nowhere near the height they were at full tide.

(As my second interest is weather recent events have shot my posts per day average to dizzy new heights....)

Looks like it's on it's side, they were all welded together just goes to show the power of the sea

Download the pic I saved a few hours ago, compare to current pic, measure distance from right hand edge of pic to leftmost container. Those containers have not moved

Yep I agree, after comparing the picture in posst 335 (I think) with that video it is new damage.

More containers neede to overlap onto the wall a but more I think.

Incorrect!! the track is where it always was. the embankment under it has gone in the last 2 hours

Since you quoted my post with the pic in it loading from my online storage, I have taken the liberty of adding a label to it...
