I call it how it is. This is a massive $hit storm where a very small minority of people don't do their homework and end up in a place that isn't where they expected to be. This isn't rocket science, do people not check things out these days?

My original comment still stands.

You could almost say it's their fault for not using the train regularly

I actually think the station would be better named

NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM
also change here for Birmingham Airport and NEC

Unless things have changed, walking to this museum from the station involves going across the motorway junction roundabout, which if not forbidden is at least strongly discouraged. It deserves some kind of prize for poor public transport access.

Then maybe this would be a more appropriate station name:

What you do, and I think this is quite obvious, is make sure you get every interested party to make a business case - and invest in doing the necessary surveying of passengers, as well as ensuring that people who might potentially visit the UK and travel to or around Birmingham are consulted.

Some sort of international campaign and research project, perhaps involving TV and newspaper advertising to make sure nobody is missed out. You never know when someone abroad might wish to visit the UK.

For the UK, I'd suggest every householder is sent a questionnaire and businesses are contacted as appropriate too.

If the feedback suggests a change, it might then be worth conducting a trial - renaming the station on some platforms only, and having a selection of trains reprogrammed with the new name - which can be switched back and forth during the test.

At all times, there will be staff on hand to get feedback and deal with confused passengers (maybe ask the ex-Olympics games makers if they'll come back, but of course they'd need to be paid this time around).

After that is completed, it will now be very clear if the stations should be renamed or not.

At this point, the decision will be taken to leave things as they were.

And while we are at it, rename New Street - Birmingham Central

I would quite like that. Unless I'm being dense, New St isn't even on New Street. Maybe it was in the 1800s.

Of course locals would still call it New St so that'd be mostly pointless but at least it's a little better for visitors.

They already did, when it opened.

Its full name is "Rhoose Cardiff International Airport" station. (Or as it appears on tickets, "Rhoose CIA".) The station signs, with both that and "Maes Awyr Rhyngwladol Caerdydd Y Rhŵs", must be the largest in the country by a long way.

Anyone who uses a station name without further consideration can't expect to get where they want - Pontypool Road is (was?) near Pontypool, Warwick Road (pre-Metrolink) wasn't near Warwick.

Wait until we have Wrexham North Station, which is not in Wrexham town like General & Central, that will confuse a few.

That's a crap name

My apologies, I'll be changing it then, as a matter of utmost priority ;)

I don't people, especially those from overseas or those who rarely use trains, can be fairly described as "thickos" in this instance. "International" sounds more of an important station than "New Street" and given that we don't have a standard designation such as "Hauptbahnhof" to describe the city centre station it becomes a bit of a guessing game. I found myself in the same quandary in Poznan a while ago, and only got the right one by looking at the surroundings and the number of platforms.

"Central" is pretty much our equivalent. Munich Hauptbahnhof, for instance, is known as "Munich Central [Station]" in English.

And while we are at it, rename New Street - Birmingham Central

Aren't the current Birmingham International and the HS2 Birmingham Interchange a few miles apart?

No, it's more like 500 metres apart.

Hardly that much, but anyway a transit will be provided between the stations (directly opposite to the existing airport shuttle)......

It most certainly isn't 500 metres.

As the crow flies, Birmingham International to the proposed Birmingham Interchange station is approximately 1850 metres (almost 1.2 miles).
Interchange to the Airport is about 2350 metres (approx. 1.5 miles)

The proposed people mover link adds a little extra distance to these figures, as it has to circumnavigate the NEC site and cross the M42, avoiding Junction 6.
Actual distance is therefore approximately....
Interchange to International - 2800 metres (1.75 miles)
Interchange to the Airport - 3300 metres (2.1 miles)

It would be, except there aren't many Centrals in the UK, mainly because British people seem to get too attached to stations' traditional names (even ones like Hull Paragon and Carlisle Citadel and Norwich Thorpe that the railway has long since dropped).

I don't see why we can't follow the idea of Liverpool John Lennon Airport and rename New Street to "Birmingham Richard Hammond Railway Station" and rename International to "Birmingham Jasper Carrott Railway Station for Birmingham Jeff Lynne Airport & NEC" :D :D

Southampton Airport (Parkway) in the 80s (apparently, I wasn't alive then ;)) used to be signposted as:

Southampton Parkway for Southampton (Eastleigh) Airport

That definitely must come quite close ;)

Surely New St should be Birmingham Central West. Moor St would be Birmingham Central East and Snow Hill would be Birmingham Central North. :D

To me it has to start with the word 'Birmingham' for ease of use when looking up train times on websites, booking tickets, or even knowing where in the country the NEC is.

Doesn't seem to matter for University ;)
