I think a bit of confusion is being caused by the way the press release has been worded.Surely the 225 replacement will be all-electric? ie Class 801?
It uses the phrase "Class 800 series" to describe all IEP variants:
DfT said:The latest order for the trains, called the class 800 series
Later on, it explains the two variants:
DfT said:There will be electric-only (class 801) and bi-mode (class 800) variants of the class 800 series, enabling them to operate on both electrified and non-electrified routes.
In the written statement to Parliament, it explicity states this order is for the electric version, to replace the 91+MkIVs:
Transport Secretary said:The option is to purchase a further 270 vehicles to replace the electric Intercity 225 fleet which currently runs on the East Coast Main Line with a fleet of new, high quality, modern, higher capacity class 800 series 9-car electric trains.
