Excess Single to Return

Is it written in the manual anywhere that a Super Off Peak Single can be excessed to a Super Off Peak Return?

If you purchased a single in error (e.g. from a ticket machine) and you ask for this to be corrected at the first opportunity, it should be done.

Is that what happened here?

A ticket cannot be excessed if it has been fully used as your contract has ended, so you can't take a single to a ticket office at your destination and expect an excess to return.

I bought it on the train at King's Cross, which I am still on now. I purchased a single as this is what I needed for work purposes and didn't want to get my claim rejected for buying a return.

However, as a return is only ~£1 more I want to use my own money to excess to a return but the train manager says she can't do this as it would be 'fraud'

Will your work not allow you to buy a return and claim only the cost of a single?

I think this is one of those 'discretion' things. My recollection of 'The Manual' is that a excess fare of this nature can be done to an pre-existing ticket before departure (or at the first opportunity where facilities were not available before boarding a train), however, in this case there was no pre-existing ticket.
