Ideal stock for Waterloo - Exeter?
Something that can run at 80-100mph...
...something which can do portion working to allow more capacity at the eastern end of the route than at the western end...
...and to allow portions for Bristol etc...
...something which has corridor connections (due to the need for portion working)...
...something suited to journeys of over an hour...
...something which doesn't waste a lot of space (due to the platform space available given that you need nine coaches east of Basingstoke)...
...basically a modern version of a 158/9.
Ideally you'd have something diesel that could cope with Third Rail electrification, but since we don't know when the Basingstoke - Waterloo line will get "proper" electrification I guess that's up in the air.
Putting 125mph stock on there (with crumple zones and sloped noses meaning no corridor connections) seems like a waste for a route that is never going to get much over 100mph.
(nothing to do with the future of 125s though!)
