Smallest settlement where trains start and terminate

Is Ribblehead the smallest settlement to be served by trains which start and terminate ?

The 19:19 from Leeds terminates at Ribblehead at 20:42 and returns as the 21:00 back to Leeds (Skipton on Saturdays). There is also an 07:16 Ribblehead to Leeds on Saturdays.

Ribblehead itself only has a few houses and a pub. The nearest town of any size is Ingleton (population 2,000) about 6 miles away, and Ingleton is closer to Bentham station than it is to Ribblehead station.

Does anybody know of a smaller settlement where passenger trains are booked to start or terminate ?

I'm not sure that'll be beaten! My best is Gilberdyke (pop 3000), 2W12 starts here, and is the 0739 to Scarborough.

If you want to bend the rules like that then you could say the same about Tring. The station is not in Tring, it's in its own settlement known as Tring Station. Trains from Euston terminate there every half an hour or so.

But Tring doesn't have another station, so arguably Tring station does serve Tring. I think PHILIPE's point is that Fishguard town is served by Fishguard and Goodwick station. Therefore Fishguard harbour doesn't serve Fishguard, and so serves an area with a population of nil!

Not quite what I had in mind when I started this thread as Fishguard Harbour and Ryde Pier Head both serve ferry terminals.

Ribblehead on the other hand only serves a few houses.

Carstairs Junction can't be more than a couple of hundred (?), but I suppose that depends on whether you want to argue about whether "Carstairs Junction" is the settlement or whether the separate village of "Carstairs Village" counts too (there is a clear gap of about a mile between the settlements).

Is Fishguard harbour still in Fishguard though? If the answer is yes, then as I understand the question then it doesnt count as Fisshguard is quite highly populated compared to other examples. Same goes for Ryde Pier Head too.

Its not the smallest station its the smallest 'Settlement' - i.e towns/villages/remote outposts - not a station in a town that has multiple stations but doesnt have a house near it.

Ribblehead actually is the village of Chapel-Le-Dale which has a population 157. The only contender tha might match this is Sellafield. There are only a few houses there (as well as a nuclear power station) but I can't find the exact population of the place as it is grouped with other villages nearby I guess to protect privacy. Sellafield is a hamlet in it's own right. It could challenge Ribblehead though!

Difficult question. Technically I would say yes, it's named after and listed under the civil parish of Ringway in Greater Manchester - as mentioned Ringway has a population of 106. Having said that, airport land stretches into Cheshire East - no idea what that comes under.

It really depends on how you define a settlement, by borough or by immediate population?

Whitlocks End is an odd one. It's a small place (6000 people according to t'internet) but its on the edge of a much larger conurbation. There are a ton of smaller villages surrounding Solihull and the ones without stations inside their boundaries are usually only a couple of miles from a village which is. I think extending the Shirley terminating trains to Whitlocks End a couple of years ago was to allow Whitlocks End to act as a railhead for two or three nearby villages and keep cars out of the more built up area of Shirley.

Technically, Stansted Airport falls under the civil parish of Stansted Mountfitchet - population 5,533. I believe Gatwick Airport falls under the town of Horley.

Gatwick is in Crawley, population circa 100,000, although is closer to Horley town centre. Crawley to Gatwick to Horley form a continuous urban area.

It is 200 yards from Tesco and 250 yards from the nearest houses not exactly nowhere. As Bidston is part of Birkenhead the population of the area is >80,000.
